National Cancer Institute Designation

Email This Page

Emory's Winship Cancer Institute is Georgia's first and only cancer center designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Announcement     Visit the NCI site to read more.

Designation requires meeting rigorous criteria for the breadth and depth of our basic science, clinical research, in addition to cancer prevention, control, and population/behavioral sciences. Designation requires effective collaborate among these disciplines, our community partners, and fosters such with other academic centers in Georgia and across the nation.  With this recognition comes the responsibility to provide public information, education and outreach to other health care professionals and the community. The planning process, which was funded by a $2 million planning grant from NCI, took 5 years and involved extensive peer review.

The effort was well worth it: NCI designation for Winship  gives Georgians improved access to clinical trials and resources available only through designated cancer centers. We are only the 65th cancer institute to receive this honor.

What is National Cancer Institute designation?
The National Cancer Act of 1971, enacted as part of the nation's war on cancer, established the Cancer Centers Program of the National Cancer Institute. This branch was charged with developing a network of distinguished cancer-research organizations characterized by scientific excellence and the ability to bring a diversity of research approaches to bear on the problem of cancer.

What does NCI designation mean to patients?
Here is what the NCI has to say:
"Research in cancer centers... offers patients options for prevention, diagnosis and treatment that may not be available elsewhere."

"Patients benefit in better access to the latest therapies and better opportunities to take part in early trials of promising treatments."

"(NCI-designated) centers play an important role in their communities and regions and serve to influence standards of cancer prevention and treatment."
