Bladder Cancer: Introduction

Email This Page

The urological system consists of organs that produce, transport, store, and excrete urine. It consists of two kidneys, two ureters, a bladder, the urethra, the sphincter, the genitals, and - in men - the prostate. Urine is formed by the kidneys, transported for storage by the ureters to the bladder, and excreted through the urethra. The bladder is a hollow organ in your lower abdomen that stores urine.

The most common urological cancers:

  • Bladder Cancer - Mostly affects the elderly, and smokers. The disease is more common to men, but more women are developing bladder cancer as a result of increased smoking rates.
  • Kidney Cancer - Affects both men and women. Age and smoking are risk factors.
  • Prostate Cancer - Though this is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men, patients with prostate cancer can be cured when diagnosed early.
  • Testicular Cancer - This disease is more prevalent in younger men - particularly those between the ages of 20 and 34. It is highly treatable if caught early.
