Jean Sindab Project at Emory Winship Cancer Institute |
 |
Jean Sindab, PhD was an African-American scholar and activist who spent her life working on environmental and racial justice. In 1995 at age 50, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and died 13 months later.
The Jean Sindab Chair was made possible by a $2 million gift from an anonymous donor in 2005, whose initial contribution established the Jean Sindab Breast Cancer Research Endowment Fund. This fund continues in perpetuity and honors Dr. Sindab's memory at Emory Winship Cancer Institute with its support of research on aggressive breast cancer with poor survival rates, particularly among pre-menopausal black women.
An academic Chair is the most prestigious of named academic positions at Emory University. Such chairs recognize extraordinary achievements and leadership and help recruit and retain top-level clinicians, teachers and researchers who have done work of marked importance, often on a national or international level. These chairs enable Emory to greatly expand studies of innovative treatments and promising medical techniques by leading clinicians and scientists.
